Laundry routine

Natural, organic, vegan and cruelty-free products

Having an empty laundry basket is the best 5 seconds of the week

Collect – Unfold – Turn over – Remove – Wash – Dry

Natural, organic, vegan and cruelty-free products
  • Eco-friendly laundry detergent or homemade laundry detergent
  • Dish soap
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Lavender essential oil*
  • Mesh laundry bag
* only use 1or 2 essential oils (on the path of minimalism)

To do beforehand

  • Always wash new clothes and linens
  • Wash new clothes in a separate load from other clothes to avoid getting faded clothes
  • Use a few drops of laundry detergent or dish soap as stain remover (best tip) and place them directly in the washing machine
  • Pre-treat any stains based on the type of stain before washing: apply a few drops of dish soap directly to the stain and let it soak in for 10-15 mins (dish soap is the best stain remover); wash very dirty clothes or with a lot of stains separately from the rest
1. Playing favourite music (create a cleaning music playlist)
Things we do for love - The Sounds

2. Check the symbols of the label of the clothing

3. Sort clothes into groups: dark colours, light, whites, delicates (underwear, lace...)
=> delicates in a mesh bag

4. Always empty clothes' pockets (tissues...) before washing, take off accessories (belts...), unroll any turned up sleeves/trouser legs/cuffs/socks/collars...

5. Remove stains: apply a few drops of washing-up liquid,  gently rub it onto the stain and add it to the machine
=> for stubborn stains, pour a small amount of dish soap, let it soak in for 10-15 mins before putting it in the machine

6. Leave 6 small washing balls + an anti-limescale ball inside the drum
=> separate the laundry by rolling and beating to reduce the tangles of the laundry and helps to remove dirt and detergent residue more effectively

7. Use mesh bags to put small and delicate items and keep them separated and protected in the wash

8. Put clothes one by one into the machine to make sure they're not tangled

9. Pour about 2-3 tbsp of detergent into the drawer, 2 tbsp of baking soda in the softener tray and, if needed, add a few drops of tea tree and/or lavender essential oil for disinfecting and perfuming

10. Wash everything at 30° (except delicates in cold water)
=> choose the cotton or synthetic wash cycle (depending on the machine model) for about 45-50 mins (one thing is for sure, no more no more than an hour)
=> with 800 rpm in summer and with 1000 rpm in Winter
=> for waterproof mattress protector (on its own), needs an extra spin cycle

11. Remove clothes straight away (one by one), as soon as the washing cycle has finished and hang immediately on to the hangers (fewer creases)
  • leave clothes to dry on a hanger: tops, t-shirts, coats, jackets, shirts, dresses...
  • clothes to dry on skirt hangers: skirts, pants, pillow cases, tea towels...
  • fold large sheets in half and place them on a big rack
  • dry cloths outside even in Winter (under a pergola), no need a warm or sunny day, although that does speed up the process: in fact, a windy day is even better than a still, quite warm, sunny one; then, just need to bring them inside to finish the drying process
The science behind drying clothes:
  • in Summer, clothes get dry because of the process of evaporation; evaporation happens when a liquid turns into a gas
  • in Winter, clothes get dry because of the process of sublimation; sublimation occurs when a substance turns from a solid directly into a gas; the sublimation process removes moisture as a gas, preventing the formation of ice
  • sunlight and fresh air (oxygène), even in winter, can act as a natural disinfectant that destroys bacteria
  • environmentally friendly: saves energy, making it a green option compared to using electric dryers; reduces indoor air pollution; saves time and money
  • but never hang clothing out overnight: morning dew does make your laundry damp (+ not Feng Shui)
12. Sort, and store your clean washing
