Alfredo Keil's anthem
Alfredo Keil born Alfredo Cristiano Keil (1850-1907), of German origin, was a Portuguese musician, painter, poet and art collector. He composed A Portuguesa, the Portuguese national anthem, written by Henrique Lopes de Mendonça (1856-1931, Aquarius) during the resurgent nationalist movement ignited by the 1890 British ultimatum to Portugal.
He studied in Munich and Nuremberg with the German romantic painters Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805-1874) and August von Kreling (1819-1876). Returning to Portugal, he continued his studies and became a well known romantic painter. He was also a contemporary of the naturalist generation, with his melancholic intimate scenes and landscapes like his famous and great painting Lisbon seen from Ginjal (1881).
He was considered the last important Portuguese painter in the romantic style.
In his honour, a statue of his bust stands in a small green city park Praça da Alegria also called Alfredo Keil Garden, located near the prestigious Avenue da Liberdade in the middle of Lisbon.
