Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013) was a Chinese-French painter and etcher known for his non-representational paintings with a mix of occidental and oriental artistic styles.  In the French magazine "Preuves", he declared Everybody is bound by a tradition; I am bound by two.

He was born in Beijing into a family of intellectuals. Was taught by his grandfather to draw the characters of the Chinese alphabet, essential groundwork for the art of calligraphy

He is associated with the École de Paris (School of Paris) in the 50s, then affiliated with Lyrical Abstraction.  Claude Roy, a journalist, said about him:
a great painter whose work continued on from at least 10 major centuries of Chinese art, and who was one of the best modern painters in the West.
