My 3 favourite winter fruits

lychee, my favourite fruit

Be a pineapple: stand tall, wear a crown, and be sweet on the inside

1st: Lychee

here, available from December to February

The best are from La Réunion but really expensive (the first week, around 20 eur a kilo).  I also like those from Madagascar (arond 10 eur a kilo). There are also those from South Africa and in 2023 from Mozambique, first time seeing from this country.
Love it: sweet and juicy with acidic notes, and soft with jelly-like texture.

Benefits
an excellent source of vitamin C and antioxidant, helping to protect the body from chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease

Recommendation: not eat or let a child eat lychees on an empty stomach, can cause drop in blood sugar.

Pomelo, my favourite in Winter
delicious in salad

2nd: Pomelo

available in January-February

Predominantly sweet and very juicy with a minimal bitterness and less acidic than grapefuits.

Benefits
rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, so it is an anti-inflammatory fruit, may benefit heart health and the immune system and fight against cancer cells

Recommendation: for those with an allergy to citrus fruit and can affect some medicines for those already on statin medications for high cholesterol...

3rd: Persimmon

available between September and November

A ripe persimmon is soft, almost gelatinous and sweet with a slippery texture unlike a Sharon persimmon which has a crunchy texture.

Benefits
a good source of vitamins A and C (2 powerful antioxidants), fibre as well as manganese, which prevent blood clots, great for skin/heart/vision health and healthy immune systems.

Be careful
keep consumption in moderation, especially unripe persimmon contain high levels of tannins which can make digestion too cold and leave food undigested.
