All in all, I realize that travel is mostly about annoying others once you're back! - Sacha Guitry

Pre- and in-flight skin care routine

Most of time, I don't have any beauty routine when travelling.  Sometimes, if I don't forget, I just spray my face and that's it.

One of the reasons is that I have motion sickness, so I try not to move too much.  The 2nd reason, having a light OCD, I don't want to put my items anywhere where there is a crowd of people and need to wash my hands everytime I touch something... and the 3rd is laziness...

(natural, organic, eco-friendly, biodegradable, vegan and cruelty-free products)

But if I had to have a travel beauty routines

  • The day before, apply a good night cream (as I don't use it all the time to let the skin breathe from time to time)
  • Start packing early to avoid stress and rushing
  • Going to bed earlier (before midgnight!) than usual several days before*
  • And stick to regular sleep schedule as much as possible
  • Drink a mug of moringa tea as usual
  • Have a slight snack before a flight: a piece of bread and a piece of fruit (banana, mango or apple)
  • Drink a lot of water before and during the flight
  • Refill empty bottle at a drinking fountain after going through security (last week, on 9/01/24), new study about high levels of nanoplastics found in bottled water**) ; so I stop buying bottled water except if I have no choice;  2 international airports already banned plastic water bottles (San Francisco International Airport in 2019 and LAX in 2023)
  • Move around the plane every 2 hours, keep the circulation flowing and do gentle exercises while sitting to help lymph flow
  • Have some healthy snacks on hand when I'm travelling; it can sometimes be a challenge to find vegan food: French vegan biscuits made from wheat, nuts (pecans, almonds), dried fruits (apple, ginger***)
  • Meals: if possible, have some homemade vegan sandwiches
  • Try to spray my face and apply a moisturizer/sun cream at least once
* and if possible always...

** with the new capacities to study nanoplastics, scientists found that the amount of plastic fragments in bottled water is about 10 to 100 times more plastic pieces than previously thought

*** ginger helps prevent nausea

Ideally, my in-flight beauty routine

Over 6 hours of flight (for long-haul flights)
After cleaning/disinfecting my space
Cleaning hands with face makeup remover

1 week before, take care more of my skin
  • dry brushing + hydrating mask + moisturizer => besides drink plenty of water
  • getting to sleep before midnight
The day before, take care more of my skin
  • hydrating mask + moisturizer => besides drinking lots of water
  • getting to sleep before midnight
In the the morning on the day of the flight
  • moisturizer (apply even a night cream** if needed) + sun cream (the sun's rays are much more harmful at this level)
  • drinking plenty of water
  • no makeup during flight and travel outfit look once; but it doesn't change much because I wore very little makeup and now don't wear it anymore or very little on rare occasions: just a powder after the sun cream
  • no perfume* taking into consideration the people around us; easy, I don't wear it
During the flight
  • wear face mask
  • drink as much water as possible
  • spray face frequently
  • use eye drops
  • apply sun cream every 2 hours
  • do stretching exercices and moving around
  • relax: meditating, reading, watching movies, listening to favourite music
  • to prevent motion sickness: drink coke****, eat dried ginger and inhale lavender essential oil (1 drop on a tissue)
  • 30 mins before landing: face makeup remover + face mist + moisturizer + facial massage roller* + sun cream

    * to de-puff and give a boost of freshness
At arrival
  • shower + wash my face with soap + face mist + oil + moisturizer
  • avoid dry brushing and scrubbing; skin is already stressed, dry and dehydrated after a flight
* I avoid perfume (which is a complex cocktail of synthetic chemicals, like phthalates...); even natural and organic perfumes: the scent can be overwhelming and unpleasant for those around us

** but watch out for active ingredients like retinol

*** apply approximately 30 mins before flight takes off and every 2 hours

**** it's really effective... according to me, a person with motion sickness along with dizziness and headaches

In pratice

Beauty ritual that would be appropriate to do but that's not the case.  5-6 hours of sleep at a time is already a miracle or rather, if i sleep before midnight or rather if I sleep well or rather if I sleep...

In addition, toilets in the airplane are too dirty and often there are a lot of queues, make me too stressed to take the time to have a skin care routine.

Having a light OCD about contamination, this doesn't help because I need to wash my hands frequently, after touching something, especially when applying cosmetic products.
And with that damn Covid, it doesn't help!

And don't want to have a beauty routine in front of everyone.

The best I can do is spraying my face, applying moisturizer and then really freshening up at airports (transit or arrival).

Goal, try to spray my face at least twice and to apply moisturizing and sun cream once during the flight.  That's a good start!

During the last trip, still not motivated to do this ritual.  The morning of departure, I just took the time to apply a day cream + a night cream + a sun cream and sprayed my face once during the flight.

Outcome

The best beauty routine: sleep well, no cream can replace 6 to 8 hours of sleep to have baby skin + drink plenty of water + eat healthy and light!

my top 10 essentials when travelling
4 of my travel skincare essentials:
- isotonic thermal Spring water spray (for long trip, there is another one in my toiletry bag) => not necessary to pat dry the extra moisture since it does not dry the skin out
- the only non-organic sun cream I use for hot countries; I think I will not buy it again as I use very little and prefer the organic one
- always have an organic sun cream too
- makeup remover wipes (I never use make-up wipes at home, only when travelling, for convenience)
