The contemporary Aboriginal painting
Emily Kame Kngwarreye (1910-1996) was a famous Australian Aboriginal painter. She was incredibly prolific, painting of over 3,000 pieces in an eight-year period before her passing.
Her style is drawn from the traditional body markings used in the Anmatyerre women's ceremony called Awelye.
Her inspiration has also come from the country of her father and grandfather, Alhalkere which gained its name from a rock formation. It is a region associated within Utopia, 230 kms northeast of Alice Springs.
Considered one of Australian most significant artists, she began to paint in her late 70s but in a few short years became an artist of national and international standing.
