Paul Signac's pointillism
After the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, in 2021, I made a list of art exhibitions that might interest me. So, I discovered Paul Signac, Peder Severin Krøyer, Katsushika Hokusai, James Tisso, Van Dyck, Vhils and Vincenzo Gemito...
In 2021, from 19th May to 19th July, Jacquemart-André Museum in Paris organised a beautiful exhibition about Paul Signac (1863-1935), known for his luminous neo-impressionist landscapes and the principal theorist of divisionism, along with Georges Seurat (1859-1891).
This special exhibition presented 25 paintings by Paul Signac, together with 20 paintings by Seurat, Pissarro, Cross and more.
Paul Signac was a French painter, best known for developing the technique called pointillism, a form of painting in which, an artist creates a larger image from small, distinct and colorful dots. According to Seurat and Signac, these would be blended by the viewer's eye to create a more striking image than any made after mixing colours conventionally on a palette.
He was deeply influenced by George Seurat and the famed light of the French Riviera. He met Georges Seurat and Claude Monet in 1884.
After 1886, he regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes, often marine paintings and decorative panels.
Signac loved sailing and began to travel in 1892, sailed around the coats of Europe and painted the landscapes he encountered. The Mediterranean coast is a major theme across Signac's paintings, though.
In his later years, he also painted scenes of bustling cities of France: Paris, Viviers and other French cities.
He wrote several important works on the theory of art, among them, a book entitled D'Eugène Delacroix au néo-impressionisme in 1899 and a book about Jongkind and his vision of watercolour in 1927.
