Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain - Betty Edwards
Albert Einstein put it best: The intuitive mind is a sacred gift, and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift - Betty Edwards
Thanks to her, I really learned how to draw, and what is a painter's eye!
Dr. Betty Edwards, born in 1926 in San Francisco, is an American art teacher and author. An artist from an early age, she received a B.A. in Art from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She later earned a Master's degree from California State University, Northridge, and a Ph.D. in Art, Education, and Psychology from UCLA.
Her famous book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" sold more than 2.5 million copies and translated into 17 language. It got on the New York Times bestseller list in 2 weeks, and stayed there for more than 1 year!
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is entirely dedicated to teaching us how to perceive things in real life, and record them via drawing by telling us to shut our “left brain” quickly. This is an amazing book with more insight to how we can learn about the brain, and learn to draw what we see, and whatever we want.
Try it, it's stunning!
Trying out the exercises, even just the first four at the beginning of the book, is truly amazing. The drawings done before and after following the instructions are remarkably different.
I was so impressed that I absolutely had to find a drawing course on this technique, which is quite rare.
Over the last forty years, many educators, decision-makers, and even some parents have come to regard the arts as peripheral, and let's face it, frivolous - especially the visual arts, with their connotation of ”the starving artist” and the mistaken concept of necessary talent”.
In order to gain access to the right hemisphere, it is necessary to present the left hemisphere with a task that it will turn down.
That is like deciding that you shouldn't take a Spanish class because you don't already speak the language.
The perception of edges (seeing where one thing ends and another starts)
The perception of spaces (seeing what lies beside and beyond)
The perception of relationships (seeing in perspective and in proportion)
The perception of lights and shadows (seeing things in degrees of values)
The perception of gestalt (seeing the whole and its parts)
